Penalties and fines
The law says we can fine you up to £30,000 for breaking an HMO rule or condition.
We may fine you if:
- you do not meet the conditions on your HMO licence
- you let too many people live in your HMO
We may also take you to court if you break HMO laws.
Consequences of not having a licence
You will not be able to issue a notice while your property is unlicensed.
If you do not have or renew an HMO licence, we may give you one or more of these penalties:
- a civil penalty or an unlimited fine
- a rent repayment order
- an Interim Management Order – this means we can take over the management of your HMO
